I love the entire opening of Prometheus; the credits (bold cinematography) and first scene set in a distant past. I’m assuming distant past, because this scene is tops for ambiguity. Is this Earth? Another planet? It’s never made explicit. Is this where we come from? Is this an ultimate sacrifice? Does this Engineer knowingly sacrifice himself so that he can create an entire civilization? Is that his purpose as he’s left behind by his own kind?

This is a beautifully brutal introduction to a brutal movie.
