This is a tough one. I didn’t love this movie. Some of this I attribute to liking the TV series more, in acting, in pacing and in quirkiness. There are many redeemable factors that make this movie watchable. Lemony Snicket himself is well acted (Jude Law) despite always being shown in shadow. The story is solid (owing to the books) and you can’t go wrong with a movie shot by Chivo. I picked the introduction of the Incredibly Deadly Viper as the movie highlight. It has a great jump scare and I love the interruption with the Snicket narrative device.
