This isn’t necessarily my kind of movie. I think it was worth the watch, though I’m not sure it was great. But I think for what it was trying to do/be, this movie was very well done.
This is pure body horror. I think what worked so well is how amazing Demi Moore looks. It makes the story that much more tragic. Her body dysmorphia, greed and yearning for relevance cause her to lose everything. But this movie ends with a statement that it’s not solely her fault, but that we play a part. And she does enact revenge in a scene that would be too gory to show here.
I’m sure a lot of cinephiles appreciated the Stanley Kubrick and The Fly references. Twice the movie references 2001 in a thought-provoking way. My favorite scene includes a reference to the evolution of humans we see in 2001’s Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite sequence.
This movie shows us what our vanity could evolve into and how horribly it could go awry.
