Interstellar

“It’s not possible.”
“No it’s necessary.”

I saw this movie one time in the theater and my expectations weren’t fair. I wanted to have a sci-fi centric movie where there is little story about the character themselves. Which describes 2001. But this movie is not 2001 and that’s ok. It is a great movie on it’s own.

I know they consulted with very smart people to make the effects as realistic as possible and I find comfort in that. What this movie shows is truly alien. I have never seen anything like when Cooper falls into a black hole. And I know deep down we don’t know what it’s like (or even possible), but I appreciated the artistry that went into this movie that depicts one possibility.

This movie is very emotional and focuses most on the relationships with others, especially with family. If you’re looking for a sci-fi movie that is character-centric, this movie is for you.

I will note that it is most similar to 2001 in it’s theories on evolution and alien intervention. In both movies, an advanced race of beings places a wormhole near a planet in our solar system (in Interstellar, it’s by Saturn; in 2001, it’s by Jupiter). And these movies are the stories of those that traveled through a wormhole to alien worlds.

One big difference – in Interstellar, we are saved by our evolved selves. In 2001, it appears to be an alien race that helps us evolve more quickly. These are very interesting outcomes to consider.
